APPLYING AARHUS CONVENTION – ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

After Kragujevac, Subotica and Novi Sad, in Nis the office of Aarhus Center for the South and East Serbia was founded. Forming of the office was helped by the Organization for security and cooperation OEBS and Center for organization of civil society Protecta in Nis. During the ceremony organized on this occasion in Kalca, after the introduction words of Aleksandra Savic, from newly opened association of the citizens Aarhus center of South and East Serbia`, the guests at the opening were greeted by Jan Lueneburg, chief of the Department for democratization – Mission of OEBS in Serbia, Radisa Milosevic, president of the Board for life environment of the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities and representative of the City of Nis. In the name of Palilula Municipality Milos Stojiljkovic, Municipal councilor and Dragan Vidojkovic, Ekopolis, were present.

Thanks to the partnership with organizations of civil societies in Nis, Palilula Municipality, according to Stojiljkovic words, successfully realizes informing and education of the citizens on the most significant matters on life protection, protection of the basic human right to healthy life environment, as well as gives initiative to public to have influence to bringing decisions on the local and national level on these matters.

The vision of Aarhus center of JIS in Nis is to improve the implementation of Aarhus Convention in Serbia and to be the connection between state organs and wide social community, specially at the territory of South and East Serbia in regions of Bor, Zajecar, Toplica, Nisava, Pirot, Jablanica and Pcinj.

The Center, according to Sonja Popovic words, spokeswoman of the Center, will in its work promote democratic values and procedures in the area of preserving life environment, it will put efforts for transparency and responsibility on every level of decision making, actively will work on improvement of the state of life environment, protection of individual rights, present and future generations to live in the environment that does not jeopardize their health and welfare.

During the ceremony, in the City Hall in Nis, the meeting of the Board for life environment protection of the Standing conference of towns and municipalities, dedicated to applying Aarhus convention in Serbia, was also organized.
